Robust Ammonia Monitoring for Agriculture and Industrial Safety

Alphasense ammonia (NH3) sensors support agriculture, livestock housing, cold storage, and general industrial safety applications. The portfolio is built on electrochemical ppm-range platforms in A- and B-Series formats, with options optimized for portable instruments and fixed systems in high-humidity environments

Sensor Product Overview

  • Portable & Industrial Safety – A-Series NH3 Sensors

  • NH3-AF – Filtered A-Series sensors for portable detectors. 0–100 ppm range, with internal filtering and bias operation
  • Fixed & High-Humidity – B-Series NH3 Sensors

  • NH3-B1– B-Series sensors for fixed installations and high humidity. 0–100 ppm range with bias required.
  • Integrated Smart Technology (IST) NH3 Sensor Versions

  • IST adds on-sensor electronics and digital features to simplify OEM integration. IST versions include: NH3-AF-IST | NH3-B1-IST.

Choosing the Right Sensor by Application

  • General Industrial & Portable Safety

  • NH3-AF – Portable and handheld analyzers where integrated filtering and A-Series footprint are preferred.
  • Agriculture & Livestock Housing

  • NH3-AF | NH3-B1 – Monitoring of ammonia in barns, livestock housing, and agricultural storage. A-Series for portable spot checks; B-Series for fixed systems.
  • Fixed, High-Humidity or Cold-Room Environments

  • NH3-B1 – Fixed monitors in refrigerated warehouses, food processing, and high-humidity areas where B-Series stability is beneficial.
  • Digital Platforms

  • NH3-AF-IST, NH3-B1-IST – For OEMs standardizing on digital IST architecture with plug-and-play sensor replacement.

Key Benefits Across the Sensor Portfolio

  • A- and B-Series formats to cover portable and fixed instruments.
  • Designed for a broad set of OEM applications supporting industrial safety, environmental air quality analysis and process control.
  • Filtered variants for improved performance where interfering gases such as H₂S may be present.
  • IST “+” options with on-sensor temperature measurement and stored calibration data, simplifying integration and field replacement.

Why OEMs Choose Alphasense

For NH3 monitoring, OEMs benefit from:

  • Consistent ecosystem of electrochemical design and accessories (gas hoods, AFEs, ISBs) shared with other toxic gas families.
  • A clear portfolio split between A-Series (portable) and B-Series (fixed / high-humidity) that aligns with typical analyzer architectures.
  • Application support covering agriculture, cold storage, and industrial safety deployments .

How Sensors Work

NH3 sensors use the same electrochemical amperometric principles as other Alphasense toxic gas sensors:

  • NH3 diffuses through the sensor face to the working electrode, where an oxidation/reduction reaction generates a current proportional to gas concentration.
  • Front-end circuitry (AFE or OEM design) measures the current and applies calibration data stored in the instrument or on the IST board.
  • Internal design and filtering help manage cross-sensitivities to other gases specified in the datasheet.

Why Measure Ammonia Gas

Ammonia is widely used in agriculture, refrigeration and chemical processing. Elevated concentrations cause eye and respiratory irritation and can become immediately dangerous to life or health in confined spaces. Continuous NH3 measurement enables:

  • Protection of workers in livestock housing, cold stores and industrial plants.
  • Monitoring of leaks in refrigeration and fertilizer handling facilities to support regulatory and environmental compliance.
